Happy Holidays!, for those of you "in the know", barbel season has arrived. Anybody that catches a barbel weighed by ourselves over 7lbs, will have their day's fishing money returned. So, 7lbs barbel and you fish for free! (Valid until 1st March 2012)
(I know for sure that there are, at least, 50 barbel over 8lbs, and up to 12lbs in my water) So, there is the challenge. Good luck!
Cheers,
Mike

Hi guys,
After our initial success on Monday, I am organizing another trip to the same place on Monday 21st November. Those of you who came before, if you fancy it, we will see you there, on the river bank, at 9:00am. Anybody else who fancies coming along, please contact me directly for details.
It seems that there is basically one method (through trial and error) to fish this river, which is feeder with groundbait, or ledger on the bottom with maggot on the hook. I will be taking maggots hopefully in enough quantity to cover everybody, please take your own groundbait, food, etc.
I have 7 keep nets available, please let me know if you require one.
Hope you can make it, the weather looks OK so far. Please, remember you have to have a current Andalucian fishing licence and insurance to come.
Cheers,
Mike

A big thank you to everybody who made it yesterday for the "barbel fish". In the end, we caught 2 carp, 6 or 7 grey mullet and approx. 55 barbel up to 3lbs. Not a bad total considering the weather and it was our first visit. In the next weeks I will be organizing another trip, either to the same place or the river near Sotogrande. We will keep you informed. Thanks once again,
Cheers,
Mike

RESULTS OF ROY'S 4TH MATCH
1st PRIZE, heaviest bag: Eddy & Barry, 61lbs
2nd PRIZE: Ric & Gresh, 53lbs
3rd PRIZE: Gaz & Headly, 31lbs 12oz

Smallest fish: Barry, 11cm
ROY'S TEAM versus RAY'S BAR TEAM:
WINNER: Roy's Team, 124lbs. RUNNER UP: Ray's Bar Team, 117lbs 4oz
Well done guys. A big thank you to Tony for helping with advice and weighing in. It has to be said that it was a bit of a slow day, quantity of fish wise, but I believe we all enjoyed ourselves. Barry who had the heaviest and smallest fish, had to fish alone and his total did not count for the team part of the match. But I would like to say that he did pull in 59lbs of fish. Well done to him.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the next one.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi guys,
I would like some response to the idea that I have for my next match. I suggest 1 rod per angler (the same one) for the whole match. You can only use a 2nd rod if the 1st one breaks. Also 4 or 5 baits maximum with a limit on quantity. I feel this would level the match and could be fun. Please, let me know your opinion.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi guys,
Just a note to say that anybody who catches a bass, please, keep it and call us because we need to remove as many as we can from the lake. I can provide you with a bucket or keep it in your landing net. This is the only way at the moment that I can hope to control the population of spotted bass which have been introduced here since I have had the lake, without my knowledge.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Anglers,
I am happy that so many of you share my concerns over the management of my fishery. All constructive comments or ideas are welcome and will be noted. At the moment, the changes are: No rental without a licence of some sort. No dog food or meat products allowed (frankfurters and luncheon meat are allowed). Permission is needed for any guests who wish to join you around the lake (and will be limited).
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Anglers.
On arriving at the lake today, I removed a 14lbs, 11lbs, 6lbs and 3lbs dead mirror carp from the lake. I will be changing all of the regulations in the next couple of weeks. Frankly, I almost closed the lake there and then. From Tuesday 23rd August, nobody will be able to rent equipment from me unless they hold a current Spanish or European fishing licence. People who are not fishing are not allowed round the lake unless expressed permision is given. Anyone found using barbed hooks will be banned for life. The only reason any of my fish are dying is because of bad angling practices. By this I mean stricking too hard, not playing the fish long enough, dropping the fish, keeping the fish too long out of the water, etc. None of these practices will be tolerated here. In the last two months I have lost nearly 60 fish. There is no disease here and the water quality is good.
I would like all my regular anglers to please inform me if anybody is seen who is not capable of fishing here. Please, let's not forget this is not a lake suitable for beginners and there are fish in here over 20lbs. I will soon be offering angling classes to people and may appoint somebody to police the waters for me to check hooks, etc. Failure to follow the regulations could lead to expulsion.
Anyway, I will be emailing everybody the new regulations as soon as I have them prepared.
Isn't it typical of the human race, than a few bad eggs spoil something for the rest of us. I do this primarily in the protection of the innocent fish and I hope that we will all benefit in the end.
Please, send me any comments.
Cheers,
Mike

Dear Anonimous,
The subject of barbless hooks.
After 2 years of intensive fishing, I find very little if no damage to the mouths of my fish. Unfortunately, there are a few who think they are marlin fishing and are rough with the fish. This bad treatement would damage the fish whatever the hook used and I try to keep this under control. There is a local lake I know of here where there is no control on hooks and many of the fish are without lips. Also, if a barbed hook is swallowed deeply, in my experience, the fish would normally die. Whereas barbless hooks offer a much better chance of survival, as the fish will naturally, in time, expel the hook.
There are very few snags in my lake, so you do not end up having to drag the fish through banks of weed or lilies, etc. This means that generally here the fish are cleanly caught and I believe this to be an important fact in the wellbeing of my fish.
PS. The rule here is: If you encounter any damaged fish, please advise me and I come to your peg and apply healing gel.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi anglers! Hope to see you soon, the lake is fishing beautifully with loads of doubles being pulled out. Do not foget we have food available and the bar is open. (With a shaded terrace).
Just a note to say as from now BASS FISHING IS PROHIBITED. The problem being that everybody has been catching carp. Obviously, I cannot allow the carp to be caught with barbed triple hooks. So, from now on, if you are lucky enough to cath a bass, it will be unintentionally.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi anglers,
A serious note to say that lately, I have been coming across barbed hooks in the fish and on the banks. As you all know, the rule is "NO BARBED HOOKS", unless you are fishing with lures for the black bass.
From now on, unfortunately (because of a few people), I will be doing random checks. Please, abide by the rules. I have to and will look after my fish and anybody caught using barbed hooks will be expelled.
I have barbless hooks here to sell for 3€ for a pack of 10. I also cannot accept the "I squeeze the barb down with pliers" method. I have tried it myself and do not accept the result.
Please, take this note as nothing more than maintaining the quality of my fish and fishery to the benefit of us all.
Sincerely,
Mike Taylor

Hello anglers,
Just to let you know we have changed the entrance to the lake. You now enter as you drive up the hill along the side of the hotel grounds, you will see the sign posts. This will make it better for everybody as we will no longer be bothered by all the people who wonder in from the hotel. Also it allows more parking space.
Anyway, the lake is fishing really well at the moment, this week we have had many 10, 12 & 14lbs fish caught and also an 18lbs mirror.
Hope to see you all soon and we will inform you all when we finally open the bar.
There is a private match being held on Saturday, Feb 5th (spectators always welcome)
Cheers,
Mike
